Travel has always interested me, and I’ve explored Europe, South-East Asia and the Pacific Islands. A recent trip to Broome reminded me just how much there is to discover in our own country and living on the Mornington Peninsula, I’m also fortunate to have beautiful places close to home. I’ve visited every Australian state except the Northern Territory, which is still waiting for me!
Family is a big part of my life. I have three adult children who live in Melbourne with their partners, and I couldn’t be prouder of the people they are and what they’ve achieved.
Life, Laughter and a Hand of Cards
So, why ‘playing cards’ for MAM?
Some of my earliest card-playing memories come from rainy days on family holidays. As a younger sibling and cousin, I’d join in with everyone else, often without having the faintest idea how to play the game properly, and strategy? Well…what was ‘strategy’?
Looking back, there’s something rather fitting about that. Life doesn’t always come with instructions, and we don’t necessarily know the rules when we begin or how to play our best hand.
Over time, playing cards have come to mean more to me than just a game. They remind me that we’re all dealt different hands. Some bring wonderful opportunities; others bring challenges we never expected. We can experience joy, change, and sometimes difficult circumstances.
My experiences working in the mental health sector, travelling overseas with a child rescue organisation and my own personal experiences, have given me a greater appreciation of the different circumstances people face. Everyone has their own story, their own struggles and their own way of coping. There are also many wonderful people who dedicate their time and energy to helping others.
I believe resilience is often found in the small things: adapting, trying again, accepting a helping hand or simply taking the next step when the way forward isn't clear.
We should never stop learning. Modern technology can feel overwhelming with its fast pace, but learning new skills keeps our minds active, builds confidence and opens doors to new opportunities. We should remember that we don't have to master everything at once and most importantly, there are talented people (such as those I work with), that thrive on their work with technology, and helping others learn about it and benefit from it.
Finding Better Ways to Play
Perhaps that’s why the playing-card theme feels so right to me. It reflects life as I see it: a mixture of choices, challenges and opportunities. I see the same thing in business. Sometimes the pieces fit together beautifully; sometimes a different approach is needed.
Through MAM, together with the team, we enjoy helping businesses see those possibilities and find practical ways to improve how they operate.
